Mason Jar Sewing Kit

Monday May 1, 2006
Today on Martha Stewart, Martha demonstrated how to make a sewing kit out of a Mason Jar. Have you ever made one? I love the idea but I'm thinking that some wool wrapped in the fiberfill top would help the pins. Post your ideas in the comments.

Does a picture come up for anyone? and why wool? I’m thinking these would make a great gift with a couple of fat quarters tucked in (for a quilter)!

I have made a similar sewing kit but I used a large plastic handcream container with a flat lid(Cetaphil) and a plastic dog vitamin container (taller, more room for stuff). I glued the pin cushion which is basically fiber fill or roving covered with fabric on a base of cardboard the size of the inside of the lid. This is very handy for a sewing class or even at home. When you take off the lid you can set it out and use the pin cushion and keep track of your “stuff” like thimble, small sissors, seam ripper etc. When ready to leave class put everything back in the container, screw on the lid. Pins stay in the pincushion inside the container. I think this works better than the outside pincusion and isn’t breakable.

I used a 99 cent kids’ plastic pencil box to carry my pincushion and other small supplies (scissors, 6 inch metal ruler, thread, thimble, needle threader, needles, tape measure to class.

No, a picture didn’t come up for me either. The idea of glass does concern me a bit, otherwise great idea.

There is no picture of the jar. I emailed them to see if they have one to put up. If not.. I watched the show ans I’ll make one to put up. I planted a bunch of berry bushes this year thought… in hopes of making lots of jam… so I was holding on my jars. I gave a lot of jam away as christmas gifts last year and many “let me know” when their jars were empty, so I’m planning the same kind of thing for this summer and Christmas.

I have a bunch of plastic mayonnaise and peanut butter jars. I think they would work for this. I like the idea of the inside pin cushion.

I could not get the picture to appear either. What do think the problem is?

I can not get the fabric to fit around the polyfil and lid to glue down. Should the circle be a different size or what am I doing wrong?!

(10) Sarah says:

I was very disappointed in this project. None of my caps would screw back on the jar after the top was finished.
