Taking the time to learn what the sewing machine can do, how to sew a basic seam and most of all how important pressing is to sewing wasn't what they had in mind when they approached me for help but it has definitely worked out for them... in just a few hours.
I received a new embroidery machine and I wanted play time as much as they did... so I combined the two... I embroidered a few samples on my new machine and then handed the samples off too the girls, suggesting they made pillow fronts out of my embroidered samples. We had been to a new quilt fabric store and the stack of fat quarters were still on the table. They noticed how many colors were in the embroidery there were in the pile of fabric and wanted them to all be in their creations... so we did some strip piecing around the embroidery.
They learned to use rotary cutting tools to cut strips. They learned how to set a seam guide, how to sew a straight seam and how to press a seam just in assembling the pillow front.
Now they are learning to stitch in the ditch to quilt their creations.
On their next visit they will learn how to cover cording to create piping which will give me a chance to explain the bias grain of fabric and how to use the zipper foot on their sewing machine.
