Historical Sewing

Tuesday July 29, 2008
We should have read How To Have A Truly Relaxing Staycation before we started our vacation week and started siding and painting the house... by day five we were more tired than if we had gone to work!
We decided we need some real time away from the house and explored day trip options. We decided to explore Howe Cavern and The Iroquois Indian Museum. I admit the cave was totally fascinating but the museum caught MY attention when I spotted the sewing that held a bark canoe together... even more when I found hand woven sewing basket and the tools inside. I know I won't be throwing away or composting corn husks again after seeing the wonderful creation made with corn husks! The "hands on" area make the museum a fantastic place to travel with the kids or kids at heart!

I have gotten an 1890s’ White treadle sewing machine. It seems to be in working condition. But I don’t know how to use it, thread it. I don’t want to damage it by using it improperly. Could someone help?

Brenda, they have a site I had written down a few years back on all old machines, and I will look for you. I have a small Singer, just like a childs size, I am having my “machine expert” clean it up. It still has thread in the machine, all set to go. It is the kind i need to take to my demos for my “sewing classes” Sewing for kids” Good for you, i wll get back to you if I locate that site.
