Disasters Happen!
Monday August 25, 2008
As someone who has lived through more than one disastrous situation, I know the impact disasters and being uprooted have on a person. There is nothing that matches the feeling of having absolutely nothing.
Shelters are all over but they are stretched to their limits just to keep the shelters open and couldn't possibly purchase give away items. Many women come to a domestic violence shelter with nothing to call their own. The councilors are wonderful at helping to rebuild these broken women but having something they can use and call their own is bound to help.
Churches and community groups are there when disaster strikes. They know just how devastating a disaster can be and are always looking for items they could sew to meet the needs of disaster victims.
A number of years ago, my county 4H started a once a month charity sewing night. On that night kids (and leaders) who are interested in sewing come to the hall and we teach them to sew while they create an item for charity. One of the charity sewing items my county's 4H groups made are these personal care kits. We have given them to local domestic violence shelters and they were happy to receive them. Use your group or organization to make them following these free directions.

What a great idea! So simple and quick to make. With back to school sales, many stores are selling washcloths 12/$1. I could see filling for men by including a razor and shaving creme, babies with diapering supplies. This idea is especially timely for me since I have several imminent babies to give to and with Gustav bearing down on the coast, we are preparing for another round of evacuees like after Rita and Katrina. Again, thanks.
