Kids and Summer Vacation
Sunday June 28, 2009
I have a couple of young email buddies who are just learning to sew and as summer approached they hit the panic button about what they were going to do all summer. Many don't have a Mom or Grandma who sew but they do have a sewing machine in the house. My suggestion for them... pick one simple project to accomplish each week this summer. They could even make a list of up-coming occasions that they will need gifts for giving and arrange their project list around their gift giving needs. The Top Ten Easiest Sewing Projects is a great place to start picking out summer sewing projects that aren't overwhelming.

Hi Debbie,
Have been reading your sewing site as long as you’ve been there.Love learning new things.
About “kids and summer”, I think it helps if they can make something for themselves to wear. I have a copy of “SEW TEEN” by Sheila Zent. Someone recommended it [ may have been you]. Just a thought.
Sincerely,
Jean
Iagree with the other comment. I plan to teach my daughter to sew this summer, they have no “home ec” at her school anymore – unbelievable to me – where do they think kids will learn to sew a button, press their clothes, etc. Last year we did hand embroidery, and she embellished some of her clothes. Also have done simple knitting projects .
I taught both my daughters, and son, come to think of it when they were about 9 or 10 when they had to construct their own costumes for Odyssey of the Mind. Then the girls used their sewing skills to make receiving blankets for newborns for their Girl Scout Silver Awards. Also taught 3 other girls to sew on those little blankets. The jump in self esteem for those girls was priceless.
