Wal-Mart Fabric Departments Coming Back

By July 15, 2011

Follow me on:

It's been rumored for a while but now there seems to be evidence that it's more than a rumor.† Wal-Mart had originally planned to eliminate the fabric department when they redesigned the Kingston NY store but low and behold, they kept a fabric department... smaller than the original but at least they were selling real yardage. The Catskill NY store had never had fabric but they brought in pre-cut flat folds.

Now I'm starting to receive email from various parts of the country about fabric departments reappearing in stores they had been removed from. Ligonier PA is one of the stores that I have had a report of a fabric department being put back in the store.

Personally, I am disappointed. The Kingston NY store is across the road from a large Joanns Fabric and Crafts.† There are absolutely no fabric stores anywhere near the Hudson NY store but they removed fabric and there is no sign of it coming back there.† Maybe there is still hope but if they want to meet the needs of the public, they should pay attention to areas with no alternative source of fabric.† So I'll try to remain patient and keep writing to Wal-Mart.

As a whole though, it looks like our buying power is winning and fabric is making it's way back in to the stores.† Keep up the good work my sewing friends... we just may win the battle yet! Please use the comments to let us know the status of fabric in your local Wal-Mart.

(3) trepto says:

Our local Walmart has been not-so-subtly hinting for close to two years now that the fabric department is going away; it’s the only store left within at least 30 miles that still has anything more than a glorified “knitting and scrapbooking” aisle. A few months ago they had a massive overhaul and condensed the entire department into 2 1/2 aisles and put all of their yardage on clearance, and I thought for sure that we’d reached zero hour, but summer stock is coming in and they’ve expanded by another aisle in the last few weeks! I’m glad to hear I’ll probably be able to continue indulging my midnight sewing urges. ^_^

The fabric dept. is coming back to our Walmart in Mt. Pleasant Texas. I am not sure how big it will be, but anything is better than nothing. The nearest fabric is 60 miles in any direction.

(10) Dee Robinson says:

i have written to wal-mart many times and told them the reasoni shop there is the fact that i can do my fabric/arts & crafts products as well as my roceries and if thy did away with that department and i was going to have to make two stops any way, they would never again be one of my stops. I don’t know if it did any good, but we still have the department, just not very well stocked which causes me to have to do some on line shopping.

Went to Wal Mart two days ago and it seemed they were rearranging the store again. I don’t like it when they do that buut went to where the sewing and craft aisle were I need some elastic for a skirt I am making and saw wonderful sight. A Cutting table for fabric. Yeah.

July 22, 2011 at 6:31 am
(13) susie says:

Rockford, IL still has 1 store with fabric. it’s on the west side. Antioch Walmart has fabric but that dept is getting smaller. McHenry, IL store has a small dept with some fabric.

I used to buy the ‘roll end cuts’. Nice fabric and inexpensive, but I don’t see that much at all anymore in my area. The other fabric they carry is less at Joann’s and Hancock with the coupons which come out every month.

July 22, 2011 at 6:32 am
(14) beth062363 says:

Went to my local Wal Mart here in central NY and they were rearranging the store again. They do that too much. I went to the “sewing and craft” aisles to get some elastic for something I was making and saw a wonderful sight. There was a fabric cutting table. It seems that the fabric section is coming back. I am very happy because the nearest fabric store is a half hour drive from my house.

(16) Toni says:

Here in Bristol TN and close by in Kingsport TN the WalMart’s have said they are taking the fabric dept. out but so many people expressed their thoughts against it that WalMart has kept the dept. We have two other fabric stores but a little competition is good. Thanks for listening WalMart!!

July 22, 2011 at 7:25 am
(21) Marcia says:

(22) Sylvia says:

We have been very lucky to keep our fabric dept. in the Walmart at Commerce, Ga. They also have some notions and patterns as well. Otherwise, it means travelling 25 to 30 miles away to get these same items.

Rumor was they were going to close the fabric department in out Walmart Store – because they were building a smaller Super Walmart in Homosassa Florida. (25) Janice says:

I was in the new Wal-mart store in Monroe, Mi the other day and all the crart shelves were cleared and the sign said FABRIC COMING SOON. The old store had a large fabric dept and the new one across the street didn’t. Now it does. Your comments have been heard. Our town had lost almost all it’s fabric stores and now they are coming back thanks to people like you on line that have sparked the interest of all us sewers. Thank You Debbie

(26) Kathy K. says:

We lost a family-owned fabric store in our area (Southeastern Mass.) that had been in business for 92 years. Nearest Jo-ann’s is only 8 miles, but a Wal-Mart would be closer. Don’t know if fabrics are coming this way.

July 22, 2011 at 7:48 am
(27) m.reichold says:

We have 2 large wal-mart stores in area. They took out fabric dept. from one….other one still has small but decent fabric dept. BUT …. they never, never have any sales clerks in the dept. Can’t think of a better way to say…” no one ever buys our fabric”. No matter what time of the day … there is never a clerk around the fabric dept. to help.

July 22, 2011 at 8:02 am
(28) Linda Walmer says:

The Walmart in Stockton, CA has a fabric area. It is a disgrace to say the least. It is so messy. The word out is they plan to stop selling fabric altoghter. I pray it is not true because a lot of people still like to sew. I will write them a letter. Maybe it will help if more people wrote them. We need a place to buy fabric.

July 22, 2011 at 8:12 am
(29) Devorah E Goldberg says:

It was a sad day for me two years ago when the Dickson City/Scranton, PA Walmart got rid of its fabric dept. Joann’s is close by, but doesn’t always have the same bargains as Walmart had. And of course, one stop shopping was a big draw for me. I hope they’ll reconsider coming back here. D, Goldberg

July 22, 2011 at 8:13 am
(30) Koreen says:

I live in the Salt Lake City Utah area. We are very lucky to have many Walmart (food only) stores and also many Walmart Super Centers. A while back they changed their fabric areas to 2-3 isles but left one store in West Valley City with a full fabric area. And believe it or not this store is not in a populated area. Walmart does some strange things but I am grateful for what we have. I hope they do their research in other states and build more stores with full fabric centers in places that could use them.

July 22, 2011 at 8:16 am
(31) April N says:

They are bringing back the fabric department here in Avon Co. I have heard 2 different stories. Change of top management was one of the stories and the other was the thousands of letters that have been received complaining about the removal of the fabric departments. What ever the case, I am glad they are coming back !

July 22, 2011 at 8:29 am
(32) CindyB says:

Tifton, GA Walmart should have their new smaller fabric department fully stocked and ready to go today. I can’t wait to go there after work and check it out. Just makes me want to say “I told you so!”.

July 22, 2011 at 8:32 am
(33) Janice Caudill says:

Our WalMart in Prestonsburg, Ky is still selling “by the fold”
but not enough choices. I don’t buy it. I usually avoid Walmart, if at all possible.
And we have no other fabric stores within 140 miles.

I have contacted
Wal-Mart stores about keeping fabric in their stores where we can buy the yardage we want – not buy PRECUT fabrics. We will continue to contact Wal-Mart.

(36) Jo Ann says:

I live in Pineville, NC and they closed all the fabric dept. in all the Walmart stores except 2 and they are not that close to me. I am glad they are thinking of restoring that department. I even find that my stabilizers are so much cheaper there than at the fabric stores. I find that no matter where you go there is not a good variety of fabric for sewing, what has happen to it. There is lots of fabric for quilting and loads of upholstery fabric stores, I still make clothes.

July 22, 2011 at 8:40 am
(37) sallie says:

When I started sewing even Kmart had fabric. One mall had two dept stores that carried fabric the Singer store and a good size fabric store.

When I travel I am always looking for quilt shops and fabric stores.

July 22, 2011 at 8:48 am
(38) Jo Ann says:

The Belmont NC Walmart still has a nice section, it has gotten smaller, but they still sell some fabric. Galleria Walmart in Charlotte, NC by far still has the largest section.

Walmart in Oshkosh, WI. They took out the fabric all together about a year ago. Now they just have 3 or 4 isles of crafts. I really miss the fabric dept!! I want it back!! We do have a Hobby Lobby in town and that is where I get most of my fabric now.

July 22, 2011 at 9:01 am
(41) Elic says:

I was in my favorite Walmart and saw they were putting back in a cutting table – I haven’t been back there to check since, but I was told by an employee it was coming back then.

I’ll be doing a more major shopping this weekend rather than a quick trip and will check again.

(42) Mummypotamus says:

Here in Austin, TX I have noticed WalMart bring fabric departments back to the stores! They had notions, wool, sewing machines and various other craft items, but just in the past 2 months there suddenly seems to be all this delicious cotton turning up! The one I went to had 2 aisles filled with bolts of cloth – I found myself getting a little giddy. ;)

July 22, 2011 at 9:11 am
(43) Denise says:

Saint Petersburg FL, one of the Walmart Super Centers still has fabric, but they’ve made the area smaller. The other store does not carry any.

July 22, 2011 at 9:13 am
(44) Barbara says:

Our local Walmart doesn’t have any fabric–they use to have a great one. They decided to add food items–that aren’t worth much in quality.
Another Walmart in the next own (20 miles) has a reduced amount but so poorly displayed it is difficult to WANT to look. They just stack bolt on top of bolt–hardly a ideal way to encourage buying.
There is no fabric stores in this area–I buy a lot over the internet and when I visit my Dad I always make a stop at the fabric store in his area! Walmart needs to pay attention to its customers!

July 22, 2011 at 9:13 am
(45) Loretta Hansford says:

Walmart redid the store again and its no better.. aisle may be wider but the things you want they have stopped carrying. like fabric,, the one thing most ladies do use or want.. we make things for our grandchildren.. shut ins.. donate to hospital ,, when its pre cut there is not enough to do that with.. we really need fabric back in the stores…thanks. Loretta

July 22, 2011 at 9:17 am
(46) Frances says:

Our Walmart in Las Vegas, NM is still here. We wrote letters years ago for it to stay. There is a new quilting store in town. Otherwise, there is NO fabric for a 60 mile radius here.

July 22, 2011 at 9:20 am
(47) Donna says:

Brownsburg, IN still sells fabric and does not look like it will stop. There is also a Wal mart in Brazil, IN that has a wonderful fabric and craft dept. they have everything! Hopeful that they both keep thier fabrics because even though there is a Joann’s near by, I sew for my grandchildren and a less expenseive fabric is nice:)

July 22, 2011 at 9:22 am
(48) Sue J. says:

Our Walmart here in Athens, TX never lost it’s fabric department. I am very glad. The other fabric shops are in Tyler, TX, about 40 miles one way from my house. I’m getting ready to retire and looking forward to firing up my sewing machine.

July 22, 2011 at 9:23 am
(49) Matti says:

Walmart in New Hudson, MI, still has a fabric department, but it is lightly staffed. Getting someone to cut is really, really difficult. Rumor was that all of the Detroit-area Walmart fabric departments condensed down to this one. I hope that bringing back the departments means that they will bring back some hours for staffing them :)

July 22, 2011 at 9:24 am
(50) Angela says:

I was very sad to see the fabric deptment leave, but I noticed remodling in my local walmart and spoke to an employee who said they were bringing back the fabric department. Yeah!!!!!

July 22, 2011 at 9:24 am
(51) SC Drake says:

Here in Winder Georgia our fabric disappeared a few years ago. Went in last week for black thread and none could be had in the entire store (stock room and all) however the display area for sewing notions has shown considerable improvement. Our closest facric store is over twenty miles away one way, so it would be wonderful to hope that one day in the distant future, our fabric would be returning. Thanks to the others for the encouragement.

July 22, 2011 at 9:31 am
(52) patty truitt says:

fabric dept here in crossville, tn is all gone. you have to travel 30 mins. to get to the nearest walmart. further to get to a bigger city. sadly it seems its not coming back.

July 22, 2011 at 9:32 am
(53) Sewbeit says:

I was told by a clerk that the store manager said that fabric would come back to his store over his dead body. That is in Middle TN and we don’t have any place for fabric, except to drive an hour + to get to a store. Been ordering on line alot.

July 22, 2011 at 9:33 am
(54) Roberta says:

Our local Walmart here in Marion, Ohio remodeled last year again and took out all the fabric dept. I went in recently and was so happy to see bolts of fabric coming back. We have a Joann Fabrics and Hobby Lobby here but Walmart did have some different selection of fabrics to choose from as well. Glad to see it !!

July 22, 2011 at 9:34 am

We have two WalMart superstores here in Rome, GA that had large fabric dept. prior to the remodel. They are now completing the addition of a smaller full service area in only one of the stores.

July 22, 2011 at 9:45 am
(57) Elizabeth says:

They’re 3 Walmarts in my area with a 30 mile radius. One has a small fabric dept., another has a well kept fabric dept., and the last one doesn’t have any at all. Needless to say I don’t shop at the one who doesn’t have fabric. That is why I go to WalMart anyway. If theirs no fabric no shopping. And that’s the way it is.

July 22, 2011 at 9:47 am
(58) Dianne P. Campfield says:

Good Morning just want to let you know that in Rome, Ga that the fabric is back! Yeahhhhhhhhh Was truly shocked when they took it out but am very pleased it is back.

July 22, 2011 at 9:48 am
(59) Andrea says:

They are keeping the fabric in our Cocoa, FL store even after the remodel. Also, the cutting tables are being brought back to the Titusville, FL as well. I shop Walmart over Target because of the fabric department. You have to check out the new shipments every week!

July 22, 2011 at 9:49 am
(60) Darlene says:

We have some fabric in our Redwood Falls, Mn. store but could have more..

I wish Wal Mart would bring back some embroidery floss, i have to drive 40 miles to buy floss…..

(61) Terry says:

SOOOOOOOO Happy :) that the Norwalk, California Walmart has kept their Fabric dept open even though rumors of store re-model in the future would eliminate fabric. Employee C. is so very helpful to assist me always!
There’s no other fabric stores around! :)

July 22, 2011 at 10:01 am
(62) Annie says:

Our Walmart here in Roanoke, Texas is big and loaded with all kinds of fabric! I realized this when I was on the hunt for a heavy cowprint for a cowgirl outfit and just popped in figuring there was NO way – lo and behold – there it was! Perfect and for a decent price. I heard that Walmart fabric is loaded with formaldahyde though. Anyone hear anything like this?

July 22, 2011 at 10:04 am
(63) Jennie says:

Hayward, WI – Walmart took the fabric section out.
Ashland, WI – Fabric department is still there, but they hiked the prices up quite a bit.

July 22, 2011 at 10:05 am
(64) Denise says:

Our local Walmart in Vestal, NY has started to expand the fabric after reducing it to practically nothing (and nothing good). I stopped by yesterday and was pleased to see more fabric and a nicer selection than it had been several weeks ago. We also have a JoAnn’s not too far away and several small quilt shops in the surrounding area but it’s nice to have a choice.

July 22, 2011 at 10:14 am
(65) arva says:

Fabric in our Walmart is slowly making it’s way into the store here in Casa Grande, AZ but it is on the smaller side also. I did notice that the prices are alot higher than before and we also have a Joanns opening up on the 29th of July here in Casa Grande. I am sure there is alot of excitement because the nearest big fabric store is about 37 miles from Casa Grande and when Walmart shut theirs down it was devistating to alot of people especially the ones who didn’t have the transportation to go out of town.

July 22, 2011 at 10:23 am
(66) Bev says:

Our Walmart in Gainesville, Florida has never lost its fabric department. But the one in St. Augustine did away with theirs some time ago. When I asked about it just the other day, employees answered that they had heard nothing at all about restoring it. For quite a while they had continued carrying all of their sewing/quilting tools and supplies (other than fabric), but they have also cut way back even on those items. It’s very frustrating.

July 22, 2011 at 10:24 am
(67) Debbie says:

In Sanford,FL the fabric department was taken out during a total store remodel, however I saw it coming back while shopping last week. Alright! Thanks to all who spoke up and got fabric back.

(68) nettie61 says:

Walmarts in Sulphur Springs and Minneola E.Tx have increased the fabric dept :) the stock that is it’s all crammed into the same space but that’s Ok it is at least there . we’re miles from fabric shops . I saw comment for Wichita FallsTX and I had noticed no fabric depts there when I visit but at least they do have some fabric shops in town .. I think the small rural towns are the ones hurt most by the shut downs as we don’t have the chain stores and the little individual stores we had were run out of business by Walmart

July 22, 2011 at 10:26 am
(69) marilyn brenner says:

Our Walmart, Houston, Missouri, eliminated the fabric dept. We are really in the “Boonies” and would have to travel over 2 1/2 hours to Springfield, Mo for fabrics or supplies. There is one in Salem, Mo. about 20 miles away, but the supplies are limited there. Walmart, HELP, HELP, HELP !!!

(73) Jo says:

My sister and I were in the WalMart in Grove City, Ohio early this morning and we saw some bolts of fabric. They are doing inventory so we thought they had just found some in the back and brought it out. We ended up having 4 people helping us (2 co-managers). The girls were learning how to work with unpackaged fabric. The female manager asked us if we were glad that the fabric was coming back. She said they had so many complaints and requests, they decided to bring the department back. Needless to say, we gave her a resounding “YES” and we told her we were going to spread the word.
It pays to speak up!

July 22, 2011 at 10:49 am
(74) Cristen says:

The walmart on the west side of Wichita, KS has a full line of fabric including precuts.

The walmart in Holdenville, OK is discontinuing. I think it is dumb because then people will have travel to Shawnee or OKC in order to purchase fabric. Although I don’t know how many quilters there are in that area.

I know there are a lot in Wichita.

July 22, 2011 at 10:58 am
(75) Barbara B. says:

they still don’t have a fabric department in Morgan City, Louisiana. I wish they would. I have to drive 35 miles to get fabric

(76) kay says:

In Las Cruces N.M we have just the folded fabric. I wish they would bring back the fabric, I used to go and stay a while in that dept because it make me feel calm and I could get good buys. We have a Joann’s but they are high in there prices.
We are in a time when we need to saves any way we can and need to bring back the skill of sewing.

(78) em says:

Wal-Mart in Raynham, MA has revived their fabric department, albeit a smaller version. There are bolts of material, notions and a former fabric department employee who cheerfully cuts your yardage for you.
Let’s hope other Wal-Marts follow suit!

July 22, 2011 at 11:17 am
(79) Carol says:

While I was having fabric cut in one of the last remaining “old’ Wal-Marts, I was told by the clerk, who appeared very knowledgeable on the subject, that Wal-Mart has decided to bring back cut yardage departments in select stores. He gave me an example of the stores in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls area that were going to have full fabric departments and the stores that would have pre-cut departments. This is certainly a step in the right direction as opposed to just wiping out the cut yardage department entirely. This gives hope that a store could opt to have a full department with enough pressure from area shoppers. Newspaper articles confirm that Wal-Mart acknowledges that they made a huge mistake in scaling down their stores and the public outcry made them rethink all of that. Money talks…

July 22, 2011 at 11:28 am
(80) Annette says:

Lebanon, Mo Wal-mart has brought back the fabric department very small not much selection. Hopefully we will see more choices soon. Zippers are far and few between. Travel 50 miles to buy zippers and many sewing notions.

Bridgeville – Heidelberg ( Pgh, Pa) has a wonderful array of fabrics and hope it will continue to be well supplied.

(83) Lee Meadows says:

Our Walmark store in Cabot, Arkansas has no fabric, not even pre-cut. But our Tuesday Morning, has fat quarters and 1 yard pre-cut fabric. Our Jacksonville, Arkansas store kept the fabric department, which I no longer shop, because I can buy the same fabric at our Hancock store in Searcy, Arkansas for a cheaper price, our Walmark in Searcy and Lonoke stores do not carry fabric. Anyway, I like fabric from some place other than China.

(85) Zoe says:

Our fabric department in the Port Angeles, WA store was a casualty of the new mega Walmart move. They had a well prganized, well stocked craft/fabric area in the old store then they moved and whole store is a nightmare to go to AND there is an ever dwindling “craft area” consisting of notionless notions and pre-cut fabric kits. I was in there the other day and was sad to see much of that department was on the sale dump area.

Whoever set up and is running that store should be fired.

I hope the Wal-mart in Warren PA will add the fabric department. While it was being built, Wal-mart decided to eliminate the fabric departments in their store chain. The hardest hit was Corry, PA.

A wal-mart employee told me there was a law suit that they kept sporting goods for men and women were up in arms and they were putting material and crafts back in stores as a result of law suit. We have a great department here, and they are building a new supercenter two miles from here and I can’t wait to see how that turns out and if they keep the material they have at our small store.

In Joplin, MO, we lost our largest Wal-Mart store when the tornado came through. I have been shopping at the other Wal-Mart and they have brought back the fabric/craft dept. I was thrilled. My hope is when the destroyed Wal-Mart is completly rebuilt (they are working on it at this time) that they will also add the fabric/crafts department. Many people here still sew and many many quilt. Wal-Mart could not make a better decision than to include this department for the people of this area!

(89) laquebradakim says:

We have quite a few Wal Marts in the Bay Area. The Fremont store on Osgood still has a full dept. but I was told a few months ago, that once that store is open 10 years, It’s been 5, food will be added and fabric gone except for packaged items. The store on Story has packaged items and 2 yard assorted packages, Milpitas has some bolts but nothing like they use to. I need to go check the others and see what’s happening. We were recently in Ohio on vacation visiting family and stopped for gas by the one in Logan, and there was a huge banner outside the store, saying the fabrics are now here! That’s a good sign. I need to check the one in Athens next time we are there as the Jo Ann’s there closed awhile ago and there is no fabric close, except a quilt shop in Nelsonville about 10 miles away. It is a great quilt shop but if you don’t want cottons, you’re pretty much out of luck.

Glad to see Wal Mart is listening!

(90) Lynn says:

Our walmart in Ashland city, Tn HAD bolt fabric and a super nice craft dept which the entire community loved and used well. They got rid of it and brought in prepackaged cuts that are not good quality. So now we must drive 35 to 50 miles to shop in Clarksville or Nashville area. I sometimes want to yell “Do not mention Customer Service as Walmarts main goal” since they so blatantly ignore our needs. my church family alone is involved in half a dozen charity programs that require fabric and craft items. We need Walmart to honor our requests!!

I was in our Wal-Mart @ Bucyrus, Ohio this morning, and the gal was unpacking boxes of new fabric. We have no other source in town for sewing supplies, so this is good news. Looks like they will be moving things around (again) to make room for all the fabric.

(93) Debbie says:

Connersville Indiana just went from a regular walmart with full fabric department to a super walmart. At first they were not going to have fabric at all in the new store, then they thought they’d have the precut flat fold fabric and our store manager had to really ARGUE with the corporate powers to be in order to get us some bolts of fabric. They opened yesterday and they have both, the precut flat folds and a smaller amount of bolt fabric than they had before. There is room for more, so we have our fingers crossed! You can tell we weren’t getting that at all though because the cutting table is barely a yard across. We are so lucky that our manager stood up for us so strongly and fought so hard! Apparently it is up to how hard your store manager wants to fight.

My area in Baytown, TX doesn’t have many fabric stores. The Walmart definitely does not provide a fabric department. I am new to the area so I do miss the many options I used to have which included Walmart. I now have to drive 30 miles if I want to find a Walmart with fabric. Therefore, I wait till I visit family, which live near that Walmart, to buy fabric. Do hope they bring the department back!

Fabric is starting to re-appear in our Ebensburg, Pa. Walmart. There isn’t as much fabric as before and as a quilter, I think their supply is lacking in variety ie; not much to choose from which leads me to think they reinstated their fabric departments with just enough fabric to shut up the complainers. Sorry to be so blunt but the ‘shine’ is off the Walmart name and image in this household.

I have also noticed that somes stores have omitted fabric and others have reduced their size down to maybe just one aisle, but at least they may be listening to us their customers!!!Yea!
I am a loyal reader of your column….Penny

PS I live in Central Texas and we travel around the area in our travel trailer; but we do travel to the Chicago area and Kansas City and always visit WalMarts on our trips.

Right now Walmart is building 3 Super Walmart stores where I live…. we were told they are all due to open at the same time the weekend of Thanksgiving… just in time for the Christmas shopping season!

I have tons of sewing things here… fabric included… but have stopped sewing due to health… it is now painful for me to sew….

I am though anxious to see if any of the new stores will carry fabric! Otherwise, there is a JoAnn’s here as well as a Singer store. I miss being healthy enough to do a lot of things… including sewing… Now what to do with the room full of things here… decisions, decisions…. Enjoy your sewing and crafting while you can… and enjoy it for me too…

(103) Diane Danielson says:

I work in the Fabric Dept at a Utah Wal-Mart. I am fairly sure we are keeping our Fabrics, as I spoke to a company rep from a large Eastern supplier, and he assured us that his orders are getting larger from Wal-Mart. Stores that had been discontinued have started ordering again – and not just the pre-cut selections. I am very grateful, as I would not want to work in any other dept. Wal-Mart realized that shoppers who come in for fabric (and save up to 50% off the big fabric stores) stay to shop for their groceries and electronics.

It only makes sense to keep a good thing going – even if we do not have the big ticket items! She who dies with the most fabric WINS.

When the fabric was being removed in the WalMarts near me, the customers of one store went online and did a campaign to keep fabric in that store, and it worked. However, they do not always have an employee working in the department, so the customer may have to wait a bit to get service. It is also across from a small Joann’s. I’d love to see fabric come back to all of the stores.

(106) Carol says:

Kind of like the brown rice that Walmart stopped carrying and then brought back. While fabric may not have been a major revenue maker in itself, it drew in customers who stayed to buy other things. And when the fabric left . . .so did those customers.

(107) Karen says:

I don’t know about the quality of the fabric you were getting from WalMart in the US. The fabric that was carried in our small town was such poor quality! The flanelette had no softness left once it was washed (once) and the cottons were so thin you could spit through them. I reached the point of waiting to buy fabric when I went to the City (a 4 hour drive). If I’m going to put the effort of sewing something nice, I want to use a good quality fabric.

After reading your letter this morning I did go the newer one, low and behold there it was…fabric, thread etc etc; I was very excited and when I talked to the sales lady she said they will be getting more and more in as time goes on. I wish the Iowa Falls, IA store would get it back. I wrote the company and told them they were saving me tons of money, because I don’t shop there near as much as I used to. If you go in for fabric, you always tend to pick up “odds & ends” while in the store. Not anymore. I wrote and said they didnt think it through very well removing the fabric department. Those little pre-cut pieces are a joke. Now, when I go out of town to buy fabric, I get my “odds & ends” elsewhere. Oh well, their loss. Any Walmart WITHOUT a fabric department, should not be allowed to be called a “Super Walmart”.

Hoooorah for returning fabric in Walmart. It’s not just the fabric, people who go to Walmart for fabric: also buy other items, so it’s good marketing to have fabric (especially in places where that is the only store that sells fabric.)
I’d love to see a pattern for something rather initmate.
Women who have mastectomies need to replace their missing “…tata’s…” with something, (so clothes hang properly & look decent.) Many breast prothesis are very expensive, & not comfortable. It would be great if you could post breast prothesis patterns with fabric suggestions. So far I’ve tried several kinds of prothesis, (including knitted) & to be able to make them from fabric would allow women to make their own, from cooler materials like cotton. Difference in weight of remaining breast & lost breast can cause pain in the back.) I’m struggling with these issues having had surgery for breast cancer on one side, & I was amazed to learn that men can also have breast cancer (although it is rare in men.) Some ladies paint hopeful sayings on small flat rocks & tuck them in the home made prothesis. Please address this need for home sewers. (I know there are patterns out there, but another original pattern for sewing breast prothesis would be welcome.

We have a small fabric dept in our Wal-mart, about 25 minutes away from where I live, to Versailles MO. We sometimes have to wait for someone to cut fabric, but at least we have that dept. Now we can only go 30 miles to Versailles Mo or 1 1/2 hours away to Camdenton MO, which has a larger fabric dept.
Please, Wal-mart bring back our Jefferson City fabric department-as we like to do most of our shopping at the same time and trip there!

Went to store for velcro today and found a remodel in progress. They are bringing fabric back. . yay!!!!!!! However, they advised they would only have ‘pre-cut’ fabric. What exactly does that mean? I
am happily apprehensive about the new fabric area.

The other 2 stores did away with it entirely. But NOW, those 2 stores are beginning to get it back.. the Bleacher Road store is just starting to set it back up, and most things dont even have any prices on them yet! I live in Sonora CA and our Wal Mart has a small fabric dept. I have seen bigger at other stores, but now this winter we will also have a new JoAnn’s fabric and craft store.

(154) Patti says:

I live in Muskego Wi I have noticed they are bringing back fabric. I do like the choice of fabric better than Joanne’s or even Hancock. I am so pleased to see it coming back we need the fabric for quilting and sewing.

No signs of any fabric in the Crossville, TN Walmart. I am still hopeful.

(156) Donna says:

We have four Walmarts in our area – two in Winter Haven – one in Lake Wales and one in Haines City (all in FL). Haines City and Lake Wales still have fabric and are increasing in inventory. The one in Haines City is much larger and the are actually making room for the fabric whereas in Lake Wales they only have one aisle and the manager will keep it that way.

(157) Audrey says:

They were going to discontinue the sewing department from the store in Haines City, Fl. They started shrinking it….this after I had purchased a serger from them! There is no other sewing store near where I live. Needless to say I was very disappointed and contacted them by phone. They decided to keep the department, although smaller. They intend to bring back patterns. What use is fabric without them? Thanks to Walmart for listening to customers, their bread and butter.

(158) Susan says:

Debbie: It is a little far for you but there is a fabric store in Nyack NY…over 6,000 SF of all types of fabrics…more like a warehouse! http://www.sewwhatsnewfabrics.com

As for Walmart…some of my local stores still have fabric, some don’t…I used to buy more from them than I do now…got out of the habit when they cut back on that department!

(159) Doris Steele says:

The JoAnn Store in the 46947 area has recently closed. We have a nice new big Walmart store here. I sure hope they bring back the fabric department as we have no place to buy fabric in this area.

(160) Joan Crasten says:

I don’t live near a Walmart, but my girlfriend does. When I visit her I always shop there. I was disappointed when there was talk about removing the fabric, fortunately they never did remove it. I live in Ozone Park, NY, and there is only one very small fabric store near me, but it’s in Brooklyn. Fortunately I live near the Brooklyn/Queens border.

(161) Raytha says:

Our local Wal-marts (Meadville and Cranberrry,PA) have also remodeled and done away with the fabric departments. A really big disappointment for me, as I bought most of my fabric there. I have written several letters, but was told I was a dying breed and “not enough people sew to make the department profitable”. Let me know what I can do to help bring fabric back.

July 29, 2011 at 12:01 pm
(162) Sue says:

The Wal Mart in Mechanicsburg,PA IS putting the fabric back in, they have the racks back up and slowly filling them back up!!! I’m so glad to see it coming back!!! My husband on the other hand is NOT so happy about it, he says I have enough fabric of my own to open a store, the most amount I have is only 12 yards of one type/print of fabric!! The rest is only 6-8 yards the one type of skirt I make for myself requires 6yds.

Here’s a hint as well, Winter is coming, although it may not feel like it now, but make yourself a long skirt out of the polar fleece!!! Instead of freezing your legs or even having to carry a blanket anywhere, WEAR your blanket!! I have 2 right now and I’m going to make myself 3 more for this winter.

Please return the fabric! My child and her many children are moving in with me and you collection of great kids fabrics and equally great prices were a real highlight in my sewing..The Smurf’s are starting today and I have been waiting for a selection of those..assuming there will be someone who carries it. You had perfect assortment for Toy story…and Winnie the pooh… Please listen up…With money being budgeted everyone loves Wallmart prices!

(165) Penny says:

Walmart just put in a Fabric Department in their Clinton Twp, Mi store. It’s a fairly new superstore store, which I believe opened without a fabric department. I was in there yesterday and it is quite a nice size. But there is a Joann’s just three miles down the road, so I don’t know how they determine where to put in fabric departments.

(166) donkeymom says:

We live 12 miles between 2 Walmarts. One in Van Wert Ohio has fabric. Guess which way I go to do the rest of my shopping because you have to check out fabric some where. If not that Walmart I have to travel an hour to the closest fabric store, which I don’t use often, I have a garage full at home. Bought too much at the Walmart closeouts. Ha

July 29, 2011 at 3:48 pm
(167) Valerie says:

Pardon me for being a cynic. Knowing Walmart, they’ll be more apt to put fabric in stores where there’s a Joanne’s or other fabric store nearby just so they can run them out of business. I watched them do that to other businesses in my area.

July 29, 2011 at 4:57 pm
(168) Ellen says:

Wal-mart in Kennett Square, PA, reduced the size of their fabric department and left us with an odd assortment of grungy bolts.

(169) Phyllis says:

They took the fabric dept out of the Newport, RI store even though it was the best money producer in the store…and only after “JoAnns” business had been hurt….consequently we have no fabric store and must “leave the island” for MA or go toward Providence.

(170) Susan says:

I was so excited when I saw the cutting table back in the old sewing department. I knew that must be the sign I’d been waiting for! The Sebring, Fl WalMart already has some fat quarters, sewing notions and patterns on the shelves. Although the sales clerk wasn’t sure when the fabric would be arriving it is still exciting to see an old friend on the horizon.

(171) NANCY says:

I live in Lakeside CA,(San Dieg)area and so far I havent seen any fabric dept. going in any where.I know they are lossing money because alot of use would go just to buy fabric and end up buying other things.I dont go to wal mart unless I really have to that may be once or twice a year. But if the fabric dept. came back I know I would go a lot more.Yes we do have other fabric store but most of the prices are out of most peopls range.

(172) Mary says:

I live in Michigan and visit Indiana a lot….most Wal-marts have downsized or discontinued their fabric departments. I love their fabrics, they are affordable and most of the time up to date and beautiful….bring the department back to all the Wal-marts, please….

(173) Shirley Henshall says:

I depended on Walmart for all my sewing needs. We have a new JoAnn here in Chattanooga but it is SO expensive I cannot shop there. What is $4 at Walmart, and maybe just a little more at Hobby Lobby, is $8.99 at JoAnn – NOT! Thank goodness it hit the Walmart wallet. At first when we would try to file complaints, the office staff in Arkansas got hateful with us and said there was nothing we could do. We even had a petition with over 20,000 signatures on it from here. They just wouldn’t listen. So what’s the use of shopping at Walmart if you can’t get everything yo need there? I don’t shop there hardly at all any more and won’t until the fabric is back!

(174) Cindy says:

We were at the Walmart in Athens Ohio this week and they are setting up a fabric section there again. They have fabric in bolts, buttons patterns etc. I am thrilled! Not as big as the old one but looks like it will be pretty well stocked. I never thought I would see it again!

(175) Sharon H. says:

We have ALOT of Walmart stores in Central Ohio. One by one, each store lost their Fabric Department, with the exception of one.

I recently found out from the Walmart store, 2 hours away, near my parents house, that most Walmart stores have started to get their fabric department back.

When I arrived back home, I called many of the closest Walmart stores and was told, yes they were getting back their fabric department late summer/early fall.

Called last week to 2 of the closest Walmart stores, one store has had their Fabric department for 2 weeks. One store should have their Fabric department finished this week. I am so excited!!!!

I had stopped shopping at Walmart, when the fabric departments were removed. I shopped at Target and other fabric stores instead.

I will be shopping at Walmart again, since they have their Fabric departments back.

Thank you Walmart, for listening to so many of us, that sew for our family and for our income to support our families.

I live in Crestview Florida, Our Wal’mart has very little fabric that is all pre measured . I would love to see this store have a full fledged fabric department.. In this area there are no other fabric stores to purchase our sewing needs.. Please consider our store when making your fabric department decisions .. Unhappy Wal’mart shopper

(177) Teresa Rowland says:

I was THRILLED to see fabric in one of the two stores here in Grand Island, NE. They’re still stocking, and hope to have an aisle full by the end of this week. I talked to a lady in the department and she said Walmart had a new CEO. She wasn’t sure if that had anything to do with it. I will be shopping at Walmart more. I used to go to Walmart several times a week, if nothing else to browse the fabric, and while I was there, I almost always bought something in the store. Since the fabric disappeared I am in Walmart maybe once a week. So glad they finally listened. I believe the other Walmart in town may get fabric when they do their remodel in January. :-D

(178) JC says:

I know I’m a late replying. In my area (DC/MD/VA), the fabric has suddently re-appeared. I guess they realize (despite protests PRIOR to them even eliminating the sewing departments) that this was a HUGE mistake.

Unfortunately, it’s not what I consider “real” fabric. They’ve contracted with (I forget the company) where they have quilt quarters–NO FABRIC.

And this isn’t just at one WM in this area, but several. Some WM’s don’t even have that….they only have accessories.

It’s a shame. What can we do? Who specifically do we write in their chain of command?

(179) DebbieS says:

Although I live in So Cal and there is a big, beautiful Joann Etc at Ontario Mills, it’s the principle of having to drive the extra 5 miles pass Walmart who use to have a large selection of fabric that was not carried by Joann’s to get to Joann and back home. Since I have to pay more for fuel to get to Joann’s I don’t stop at Walmart.

i live in franklin louisiana and i dont see any fabric in any of the 2 stores where i live , ones in bayou vista,. I heard that walmart was going to bring the fabric back to one of those but have yet to see it. I don think they care enough to do it until some else opens up a fabric store around the area and then and only then will they come a knock the little guy out of business . believe me; walmart has scouts on the move all the time from small town to small town to big city doing this. they know when its time to bring the fabric back in this area. I say, that if they were to do this after someone else is trying to make a living selling fabric. then we should refuse to buy it. dont knock the little guy out. after all I noticed that walmart isnt people frendly at all. especially community friendly.

(181) Glo says:

When they opened our new Super Walmart about 6 years ago it had no fabric department. What a great disappointment that was, here in Athens, TN we have no other source of fabric. I was told by a Walmart employee that a fabric department would be in our Walmart around Jan. or Feb. I was there just a few days ago and still see no evidence of a sewing department. I still have my fingers crossed, but my doubts are beginning to grow. :(

(182) Walmart worker says:

Everyone is indeed correct a good many Walmart stores are bringing the fabric depts back. I am and have been for 9 yrs the dept manager over Fabric and Crafts at our small super center in central TX. I don’t believe every single Wal-mart will have full service Fabric depts. but a good many will. We were lucky and never lost ours. Now they are expanding even more! Some of you voiced concerns about prices. Keep in mind that the price of gas has increased over the last several years and trucks are how we get most of the prodeucts to you. Also if your Wal-mart is a Quilt “traited” store you are primarily going to recieve cottton fabrics and due to the horrendous drought conditions in our good old USA the price of cotton has sky rocketed. Trust me when I tell you that Walmart is not making a killing on Fabric which is why they took it out of alot of stores. As to why they are bringing it back my guess is the ladies who once came in for Fabric and picked up other items as well weren’t coming in anymore and therefore weren’t getting those other items. Yes our Fabric is the same Fabric you buy at Hobby Lobby Joanns ect. We get it via UPS, Fed ex ect as well as our warehouse from the fabric companies. Example Cranston, AE Nathan Textile creations ect. As for the service what has changed is the number of depts each dept mgr. oversees where before she would only have had only Fabrics and Crafts now she’ll have that as well as 2-3 others in a different part of the store. I have 2 ladies that work for me and usually 1 comes in about noon so for the first half of the day it’s just me. If you have us paged we’ll come right over. Yes we could get more people but payroll for each store is based directly on sales. So spend your spend your hard earned money at your Walmart and I’ll bet you’ll see more warm bodies to help you. Good Luck and Thanks.

I was thrilled to see fabric being sold at the Walmart in Bridgeport/Clarksburg WV the other day. Good prices- and selection wasn’t bad either. I have been in sticker shock from shopping at Joann fabric recently and am glad to have an alternative.

I live in Wichita, Ks and we have 3 super Walmarts. Not a one of them sell material. I am retired and on a fixed income. I can’t pay Fabric store prices. I try to help my income by sewing and selling hand made items to friends and word of mouth. But I have to charge much more for the items. I pay $8 to $19 dollars a yard. So, I do not make as much money.
PLEASE bring back at least one fabric dept to one of the three stores in Wichita or Derby, KS

You have no idea how happy you would make me and a lot of other people on fixed incomes.

Thank you,

We have gone through this same ordeal in Fort Myers. They had a wonderful fabric department. They marked everything down and clean out that department.

The Lehighton, Pennsylvania store brought it back. They had discontinued it and just offered the 1 and 2 yard fabrics. It turned out(a worker told me) No one was buying those- No Surprise! Being a small County(64,000 people) we have No other fabric store and Walmart is the only big store we have. Otherwise we have to drive an hour to the city in another County to look for material.

(188) Joyful in Georgia says:

Walmart carried fabric so well here in Lawrenceville, GA that they closed down the local Hancock Fabrics a couple of years back. Now our local store looks like the fabric is slowly going away and there is very little to chose from. I felt like they eliminated the competition then decided to close the dept down. Not cool Walmart! Consider your customers and take the needs of the community seriously!
