Holiday Stocking Up Date

Small stockings for donatingLast week I blogged about Making Holiday Stockings for the Troops. I have since learned that they need 3500 stockings to meet their goals of distributing Holiday stockings to the troops.  One unit alone needs 2000 stockings for young soldiers who are missing being home.  I am asking again so that goal can be reached and possibly surpassed. I have also learned the dimensions of the stockings they need and have created a new free stocking pattern that meets the needs of Operation Holiday Stockings.  This size also can be kept in a  soldiers pocket since many of them do carry it in their pocket.

The size if not only perfect for Operation Holiday Stocking but a perfect size for donations locally and for decorating your home. Stockings for Operation Holiday Stockings needs to reach them by  Thanksgiving so they can be filled and distributed for the holidays. Once we make those stockings we can sew this stocking for nursing homes, hospitals and other local places which benefit from knowing someone cares.

I think even someone with limited sewing experience could make a stocking in an afternoon... one afternoon to thank someone who has given up being home with their family to protect all of us doesn't seem like much to me! I am going to be contacting my local 4H office to see about a charity sewing night to make stockings for the cause. Since the kids are back in school I bet everyone can find the time to make a stocking or two... maybe more.

The cost of filling and distributing the stockings is an expensive proposition... expensive if the public doesn't help. If we all contribute it keeps the project manageable. If you will be working with kids, Christmas cards can be made and contributed. Be sure to visit the list of suggested stocking fillers before you decide how you will contribute.

Thank you for posting this early enough for me to get started! I looked at their web site and may go the knitted stocking route instead, but we’ll see what turns up in my fabric stash also.

Do you think they would mind if we used non-traditional (non-Christmas) colors?
