Have you tried to buy a warm hat lately? I am not a hat person which leaves me what many would call ultra-fussy about hats and now the stores are about sold out so me finding a hat in the store is close to an impossible task. Lucky for me I have a stock pile of fleece fabric that will make up a hat that is perfect for me.
Finding a hat for a child can be just as difficult. Since you are making a hat, you can make better than any of the novelty hats the other kids are wearing... just make sure you sew a name tag inside so there is no argument about who the hat belongs to. When my daughter was younger, one of her favorite hats was a "sun hat" that I made using "Wild Things"pattern making software and fleece.
