Don't Throw Old Jeans Away!

By February 25, 2013

Follow me on:

This is the time of year we all start cleaning to get ready for spring and summer... and a new wardrobe for the new season.  One thing you don't want to toss is your old jeans... it doesn't matter if you out grew them or wore them out... there is still plenty of usable fabric to old jeans!

Sure you can make a pocketbook but one of my favorites is denim potholders for the grill and when we go camping.  Even skinny jeans usually have enough fabric in the legs to make great potholders. The denim is durable and since it's recycled fabric, if they get ruined, I don't feel like I've really lost anything.

I had a good-sized stash of denim given to me by my grandfather one Thanksgiving (he could always be relied on to enable his grandkids’ hobbies!) None of us suspected it would be the last holiday we spent with him; he passed away less than three weeks later.

I carefully dismantled the garments to maximize the fabric (it took a day and a half and wore out a seam ripper, which I didn’t even know was possible!), and began hunting for the perfect project for these bits of cloth.

Four years later, each family member got a denim fabric bowl in their Christmas stocking made from Grandpa’s denim. (I used the pattern from 100 Pretty Little Projects by Lark books and played with the diameter and height.) The men loved the shallower bowls I made to hold their keys and pocket change, the women were thrilled to have the taller bowls to hold makeup brushes and jewelry. Everyone was happy to have a small reminder of the loved one they still missed.

But my favorite reaction was from the youngest in our family, Grandpa’s only great-grandson, who was born within minutes of Grandpa’s death. He looked carefully at the bowl, and promptly turned it upside down and put it on his head. He wore his “hat” the rest of the day.

Grandpa would have loved it.

What a creative mind you have!
Your family surely was blessed with your talent & grampas jeans.

:( sniff….sniff :(

what a wonderful “memory-ial” of grandpa !

When my girlfriend’s father died she made a quilt for her mother using his flannel shirts and uniform pants and shirts, even using his embroidered name from them, and backed it using his jeans.
