Christmas Angel Applique Directions
Materials Needed
- Print out of pattern
- Scrap of skin tone fabric - approx. 8" by 6"
- 1 yard of 1" wide gathered lace
- 5" of lace hem binding or ½" wide straight lace
- Skin tone color thread
- 28" of 3" wide lace or lace fabric (for skirt)
- 8" of gold gathered trim (for wing)
- 10" of 1¼" wide lace fabric or lace (for sleeve)
- Loopy chanille or doll hair - very small amount
- Approx. 6" of gold wire (for halo)
- Thread, red for accent and mouth, white for dress
- Narrow ribbon - 1/8" wide (for a neck bow)

Directions
Cut out body piece using the pattern, from skin tone fabric.
Lay out the piece on the garment or stocking.
Place stabilizer under the stocking or garment. It can be done with out stabilizer but you risk puckering.
Use a couple of pins to anchor the tree and skirt.
Set your sewing machine for a zig zag stitch with a very narrow length and a wide width. This will very by machine. On my machine I used a 5MM width and .05 length. Take a test run before starting your applique.
Stitch around the entire body with skin tone thread.
Sew 1" wide lace on to one edge of the 28" of 3" wide lace or lace fabric. Divide into two 14" pieces. Lay one piece on top of the other and gather them to form a circle. Tack the gathering so that you now have 4 layers for the skirt. Tack on to waist area of the applique body.
Stitch 5" of lace hem binding or ½" wide straight lace along one edge of 10" of 1¼" wide lace fabric or lace (for sleeve). Gather and roll the same as you did for the skirt. Tack on to applique at houlder area.
Gather the 8" of gold gathered trim (for wing) and tack on to the back side of the bodice. Pull the hemmed edge of the trim into the gather, to form the "wing".
Cut the remaining 9" of 1" wide gathered lace into a 5" and 4" piece. Gather into a "U" shape, place the longer piece on the applique bodice and the shorter piece on top of that, hiding where all the other pieces have been attached.
Use red thread to stitch a few stitches for a mouth.
Use any color for the eye.
Apply hair to top of applique head and arrange halo to be in the hair. I used white and colored it with a felt tipped pen.
Tips
You can use notions such as "Heat N Bond" to hold the applique in place. A word of caution here though: Use the minimum weight to hold things in place. Extra heavy with a light weight fabric will risk the "bond" seeping through the fabric as well as gumming up your machine needle.
Appliques are a great excuse for our stash of scrapes.
Use the same procedures to add a name to the stockings. We now have two different letter styles in the Applique Alphabet Library
