Here's directions For a simple way to dress up to a simple pair of shorts and make them a bit more interesting.

Materials Needed

line
  • A shorts pattern
  • A bit of extra fabric (depends on the pattern size but usually 1/3 yd is plenty)

Directions

line

Make the shorts as directed, up to the hem.

Mark the hem fold line.

Measure the distance around the edge of the leg opening.

Cut strips of fabric double the width of the ruffle that you want to add plus 1" for a ½" seam allowance. I usually cut a 3" strip for size 4 shorts. This gives me a 1" ruffle along the leg opening.

Multiply the leg opening by 2.5. Join enough strips or trim the strip to that length. Seam the ends of the strip together.

Press the strip in half lengthwise and work it as a single layer.

Using the lenght of your finished ruffle, measure that distance up on the leg from the hem fold line. That will be the seam line for attaching your ruffle. If you are using a 3" strip, which gives you a 1" ruffle, measure 1" up from the fold line.

Evenly Ruffle or gather along the hem edge.

Tips

line

Make the ruffle to compliment the shirt or top.

Use a ruffle to lengthen shorts that are too short.

On boys shorts, add bias tape to the hem edge to compliment a shirt or top.

Use the same methods to lengthen a skirt. Make a shirt to match the ruffle and have a whole new outfit.
