Christmas Tree Applique Directions

Materials Needed
- Print out of pattern
- Green fabric for the tree
- Scrapes of fabric for presents and tree skirt
- Narrow lace (1/4 - 3/8" wide)
- Beads
- Gold embroidery ribbon
- Thread
- Clothing item or One stocking front panel - the one I used for this applique was 16 1/2" top to bottom of heel, 10 1/2" across foot section and 7 1/2" across leg area.
- Narrow ribbon - 1/8" wide
Directions
Cut out pieces using the pattern.
Baste lace on to the bottom of the skirt section. This will be enclosed in a satin stitch later.
Lay skirt just under the bottom of the tree and baste into place. This will get covered later with your satin stitch.
Lay out the piece on the garment or stocking.
Place stabilizer under the stocking or garment. It can be done with out stabilizer but you risk puckering.
Use a couple of pins to anchor the tree and skirt.
Set your sewing machine for a zig zag stitch with a very narrow length and a wide width. This will very by machine. On my machine I used a 5MM width and .05 length. Take a test run before starting your applique.
Stitch around the entire tree with green thread.
Stitch around the skirt where the lace meets it.
Place the star at the top of the tree. Decrease the stitch width and stitch around all edges of the star.
Place the packages on the skirt and stitch them down.
Hand tack a bow on each present.
Tug at the gold embroidery ribbon until it starts to unravel. This will be the tree garland. Place it on the tree and hand tack with a running stitch.
Use beads to add ornaments to your tree.
Tips
You can use notions such as "Heat N Bond" to hold the applique in place. A word of caution her though: Use the minimum weight to hold things in place. Extra heavy with a light weight fabric will risk the "bond" seeping through the fabric as well as gumming up your machine needle.
Appliques are a great excuse for our stash of scrapes.
Use the same procedures to add a name to the stockings. We now have two different letter styles in the Applique Alphabet Library
