Flat felled seams are usually used on jeans. They create a strong, durable seam using nothing more then a straight stitch machine.
Difficulty Level: average Time Required: 20 minutes
Here's How:
- You will need a straight-stitch sewing machine, sharp scissors, and an iron.
- Place wrong sides of the fabric together, line up the fabric edges, where you are going to be making your seam.
- Stitch a normal 5/8" seam allowance (or size indicated on your pattern).
- Press the seam allowance flat and then press seam open.
- Trim 1/2 of one seam allowance edge.
- Press the wide seam allowance edge over to almost meet in the middle at the seam line.
- Press the folded seam allowance over the cut seam allowance edge.
- Top stitch the folded edge.
- Press.
- Practice on scraps of fabric before making a garment.
- Folded seam allowances should be pressed firmly for ease in straight top stitching. This will make it easier to make straight top stitching.
- Keep top stitching an even distance from the edge.
