Sewing Q&A
Terry Siemsen

The facings on my scoop-neck dress keep rolling to the outside. How can I correct this?
Melissa S.,
Fort Worth, TX

Your facings may be rolling out because the seam allowances aren't lying flat. The seam allowances on the curve of a scoop neck must be clipped.

  • Trim and grade the garment and facing seam allowances. Clip diagonally almost to the stitching line. Clip each layer separately, alternating clip placement (Figure 1).

  • Turn the facing to the inside and press, rolling the seam to the underside.

You also may understitch the facings to help keep them from rolling. Turn both seam allowances toward the facing. From the right side, stitch close to the seamline, catching both seam allowances (Figure 2).
