Sewing Q&A
Terry Siemsen

Do you have any suggestions for cutting out a garment from a smaller amount of fabric than the pattern requires?
Denise H.,

There are many ways to squeeze a garment from a small amount of fabric with careful planning and creativity. If you're trying to make a little fabric go a long way, try one of these:
  • Check the pattern for a more efficient layout than the one recommended. You may be able to fit two smaller pieces on the fabric instead of one large one. If so, add a new design seamline by cutting the pattern piece apart and adding seam allowances.

  • Fit the pattern to yourself and double-check the finished lengths. Determine if you can shorten the top, skirt or sleeve. Use a smaller hem allowance or bind or face the hem.

  • Eliminate or change a pocket. Cut facings from another fabric or replace them with a lining or binding. Replace a waistband with a facing. Add a second coordinating or contrasting fabric for bands, yokes, collars and cuffs.

  • Think through any changes you make to be sure the fit or design isn't adversely affected. Consider how any changes will influence the garment construction.
