Sewing Q&A
Terry Siemsen

The key to perfect buttonholes on knits is to keep the fabric from stretching. Try one or a combination of the following tips.

  • Reinforce the area behind the buttonholes with a lightweight, non-stretch, such as a woven fusible or organza.

  • Stitch over a tear-away stabilizer.

  • Stiffen the area with a liquid stabilizer before stitching the buttonholes.

  • Stitch corded buttonholes. A stable filler cord, like embroidery or crochet thread, or a double strand of matching, all-purpose sewing thread will keep the buttonhole from stretching. Loop the thread around the toe of the buttonhole foot and stitch over it (Figure 1).

Note: Stitching direction and foot shape vary by machine brand.

  • Note: Check the machine manual for instructions specific to your machine. Tie the loose thread ends and bartack over them to secure (Figure 2).
