Sewing Q&A
Terry Siemsen
August 2002 Sewing Q&A Index

What should I look for when purchasing ribbing? I bought some that matched my project perfectly, but when applied and pressed it went flat. Did I do something wrong or was the ribbing poor quality?

Polyester and nylon ribbings are more stable than acrylic ribbings. Ribbings containing Lycra are especially nice-- they're more stable and don't stretch out of shape as readily as others. Cotton/Lycra or wool/Lycra ribbings are particularly effective, but they're a little more expensive.

Generally it's unwise and unnecessary to press ribbing seams, no matter what the fiber content. Acrylic ribbing will lose its stretch if pressed. If you need to crease ribbing, firmly finger-press it instead.
