How do I get permission to use licensed fabrics, such as Snoopy or Disney, to make and sell children's clothing?
Kathy S.,

You can use these fabrics any way you like for your personal use, but when you'd like to sell the end result, a whole new set of rules comes into play. These guidelines are set up to protect the individuals and companies from others who might steal their ideas and profits. Some contracts are rather lenient but others can be very strict. It's to your advantage to investigate the options, to avoid an expensive legal battle.

Look at the fabric selvage edge to find the company that manufactured the fabric, then contact the company for specific guidelines. Contracts vary for each license depending on the circumstances. If necessary, the manufacturer can put you in contact with the licensing company or individual for more information. Note: Your fabric store has the contact information for each manufacturer that they purchase fabric from.
