A Walk You Don't Want To Miss!

This past Sunday, October 7, 2001, I had a meeting in NYC. I've lived most of my life in upstate New York but had never explored the Fashion District. I was determined to catch at least a few of the sites on this trip. Marcy, About Family Internet Guide and I set off from Grand Central Station and had no problems finding our way around. See Map.

The pictures you are seeing here were taken on October 7, 2001, less than a month since the World Trade Center tragedy. NYC is welcoming visitors and needs all of our support. Do not allow recent events to stop you from visiting the area. I can not begin to express the bargains on clothing in this area and know I will be returning to do some of my Christmas shopping. banner I had surfed the Internet and studied the Fashion Center Information, but admit to being total awe struck as we actually went out in to the massive, impressive NYC. The Fashion Banners, that were very evident on street poles, left no doubt that we were heading in the correct direction. banner

walk of fame

"New York has been the undisputed center of American fashion since the mid 19th Century when the development of mass production led to the growth of the apparel trades. The birth of the Fashion District, also known as the Garment Center, occurred in the 1920s, when a large group of garment manufacturers relocated to Seventh Ave. New loft space was developed especially to accommodate "modern" manufacturing and to satisfy labor's demands for safer working conditions. By 1931, this District had the largest concentration of apparel manufacturers in American design. A project of the Fashion Center"

Information Kiosk The Fashion Center Kiosk was closed on the day of our visit. The sculptures surrounding the kiosk were more then enough to keep me entranced. The sites were spectacular. Finding art totally devoted to sewing is bound to warm any sewing enthusiast's heart!

A Walk down Fashion Ave (7th Ave) is fun and entertaining, even on a Sunday when the real hot spots are closed. On June 6, 2000, the Fashion Walk Of Fame was opened with much fan fare. White bronze and granite marker embedded along Seventh "Fashion" Avenue between 38th and 40th streets, celebrate the people who have had a profound effect on American fashions.
Although I thought I had allowed myself plenty of time, to visit the area and investigate the various attractions, a few hours to explore is not enough! I have full intentions of visiting again on a day that the kiosk is open. Cast your vote on the poll and let me know if you would like me to share more first hand experiences with you.
