Halloween Costume Memories
Debbie Colgrove

We all take pictures of the kids on Halloween. Over the years pictures get lost. Before I lose anymore, I'm going to share some of the favorite costumes I've made over the years.
Rainbow Brite

I don't remember what company made the pattern for this one many years back but I remember making this costume. It was my oldest daughter's favorite doll at the time and she positively loved the costume. I lent it to a "friend" and never got it back. Be careful who you lend costumes to.

Princess

My youngest daughter wanted desperately to be a princess. I made her one with a purchased pattern. I do remember that her wig cost me more that the fabric for the rest of the costume. She felt special and that was all that mattered.

Raggedy Ann
This was a year that my youngest couldn't decide what she wanted to be. She thought the costume was ok but make up is what made it great!
A purchased pattern was used. Color was added to the apron with the use of decorative stitches on my sewing machine.

Lady Liberty
This costume is from a year none of us will ever forget. She wore it for Halloween and then for a Flag Day parade with the American Red Cross. A purchased pattern was used.

Indian
She was studying American history this year and very upset at native Americans being displaced by settlers. She made the moccasins and did bead work on the "purse/treat bag". We talked a lot about how much easier it is to make things today.
A purchase pattern was used for the main costume.

Cell Phone from a box
This was the year I didn't sew a single costume. we scanned a real phone enlarged the buttons on the computer. We made all the graphics on the computer, shaded the buttons with Donna Dewberry's one stroke painting method, painted a large box shiny silver, added and paper towel tube for an antenna and a bit of glitter. She thought the costume was cool but even better with hair glitter and a temporary tattoo.

Clowns & Pirate
That year I had gotten my first serger and a new sewing machine. I used purchased patterns and made all the collar and "Pom Pom" color with the serger. The youngest wasn't to sure she liked this stuff but learned quickly that once the picture taking was done, the rest was lots of fun. Girls always love the make up aspect!

Robot
This was a year of card board boxes and pie plates. We added an old distributer cap on the top box and ran the wires to the ears (tart size pie plates). We taped flash lights inside the box to light up colored panels in the front pie plate. An old car antenna on the shoulder made him a remote control robot. (More Robot ideas)

Adult Clowns
Sometimes even the grown ups have fun!
