Gift Wrap Bottle Bags
Liquor and wine bottles present a special gift wrapping problem. Here's a simple project that turns your wrapping into as special a gift as the gift itself. You can expect to see this wrapping used over and over again for years to come. These instructions are for a bottle that is approximately 12" tall. (See below for a larger bottle.) |
Materials Needed:
- 6 inches of 44-45" wide holiday or novelty print fabric (9 inches of fabric for a larger bottle)
- Thread
- Approximately 12" of 1" wide or narrower ribbon
Procedure
| Cut the fabric to size and fold, with right sides together, matching the selvage edges. |
Mark the fabric as shown in the diagram.

| Using a 1/4" seam allowance, stitch the side seams, leaving the 1" area between the red dots un-stitched. |
At the bottom of the bag, fold the fabric to match the seam line with the bottom fold line, creating a triangle. Stitch perpendicular to the side seam, as shown in the diagram. |
| Turn the bag right sides out. |
| Turn the fabric on the fold line, bringing wrong sides together. Press the fold line. |
![]() Top stitch, on each side of the side seam opening, to create a casing for the ribbon. To keep your stitching an even distance from the top of the bag, it is advisable to place a piece of tape on the sewing machine bed, to align the folded edge as you sew the casing. |
| Using a safety pin on the end of the ribbon, thread the ribbon through one half of the bag, bringing the ribbon out on the opposite side of the bag. |
![]() Press the bag. Place the bottle in the bag. Gather the casing by pulling the ribbon. Tie the ribbon, enclosing the front of the bag. |
Use machine embroidery on the center of the bag before assembling. Use a couple pieces of ribbon and tie them together as one ribbon. Use glitter and metallic fabric for a special New Years Eve gift bag. For a larger bottle, such as the 1.75 liter bottles, change the width of the 6" measurement to 9" and make the bottom corner stitches, 2" in from the end of the triangle. Print Your Own Gift Tag to tie on the bottle. Create Fabric Greeting Cards To coordinate with your bottle bag. |
