Step 1:
Think about the costume you are going to make. Are there plays and pagents coming up later in the year that could use a costume? Talk to the music or drama teacher and see if they have a theme planned for later in the year. Even if your child won't be in a staring role, you may be able to help the school with a costume.Step 2
Draw a sketch. You don't have to be an artist and no one else has to see your sketch.Step3
Collect pictures of the creature you are trying to re-create. Talk to your family and friends about your idea. Many minds contributing can create an unbelievable costume... feel free to remind them that there are dollar and time limits to the creation of the costume.
Start a list of all the supplies you are going to need. Include lace, trims, makeup and everything you can think of. Having everything you need allows your time to be spent on construction and being creative. Research no-sew options. Fusibles are a huge time saver and bond fabrics without having to sew.Step 4
Remember that you are making a costume that is porbably only going to be worn once. Tailoring tecknics may make you costume last forever but what good are they, if you don't get the costume finished?
Gather all your supplies. If you're using a printed pattern, make a copy of the pattern envelope to take with you shopping, or remove the "guts" and take the empty envelope to the store with you. (You don't want to buy the pattern twice and no store is going to charge you for an empty envelope.)Step 5
Set a side the time to concentrate on making the costume. Even if you can only spare a half hour a day, write it in on your schedule so that the costume is done long before the big day.
