Simple Tote Bag

You will need:

• A 15" by 30" piece of sturdy fabric for this example. Nylon is my favorite as it folds compactly and is resistant to water. Once you understand the basic procedure you can make this bag in any size to meet your needs.
• 2 - 20" pieces of 1" wide Webbing. Carefully use a lighter or candle to gently melt and fuse the raw edges of nylon webbing to prevent it from unraveling. If you are using cotton webbing, zig zag or turn under the edges of the webbing when you are attaching it to the bag.
• Thread

Procedure

Cut all your pieces to the desired measurements.

Fold the fabric, right sides together, with a fold in the longest length of fabric.

Using a 1/2" seam allowance, sew both side seams.

Use a zig zag stitch or a serger to finish the seams. To maintain the strength of your finished bag, it is strongly recommend that you do not skip a seam finish.

Zig zag or serge the top raw edge.

Fold the finished edge (matching wrong sides of the fabric and the seams) down 1".

Top stitch the top hem into place.

Turn bag right side out and press. I have found finger pressing works best on nylon.

Along the top edge of the bag, measure in 3" from the side seam and mark.

Line the outer edge of your webbing strap up with your mark and top stitching.

Sew The straps on to the bag using a square for added strength.
