Simple Ways to Meet Dress Code Rules On Ready Made Clothing

Lengthen Store Bought Clothing

By Debbie Colgrove, About.com Guide

Saying that shopping for school clothes can be challenging is an understatement. The clothes on the store racks barely meet dress code regulations...if they do. The good news is that it's not difficult to add length to make the clothes meet hem requirements. A garment that is "almost" long enough can be made "legal" by adding lace, eyelet or trim. Stop at the fabric store or sewing department on your way home. Bring the new clothes in with you and match some trim or lace to the clothing.
Once you get home, preshrink the garment as you would fabric and preshrink the trim. Hand sew the top of the trim to the inside of the garment hem so the desired amount of trim is exposed or sew it to the outside of the garment for the effect you desire to achieve.
If you are lucky the garment may have a deep enough hem that you can let down the existing hem. If the fabric is skimpy on the original hem, you may be able to add enough length to the garment by using hem tape or hem facing tape.
Shorts with a cuff on the bottom are another option because you can wear them with the cuff down or use the extra fabric used for the cuff to re-hem the shorts at an appropriate length.
