Small Handbag or Lunch Sack Made with This Free Sewing Pattern

Debbie Colgrove, Licensed to About.com
This cute little bag is great as a small handbag or a lunch sack. The construction method makes it a very durable and strong bag that you can depend on.

Materials Needed:

  • Fabric -- As shown in the picture this bag will require canvas, a solid color fabric such as denim or duck, and a novelty print for contrast. 1/3 yard of each fabric choice (as long as it's an honest 1/3 of a yard) will be ample to complete this bag. Consider recycling denim as your solid color fabric and piecing patchwork to create your contrast fabric. If you have difficulty finding canvas fabric, remember paint stores or tool liquidators... the usually have inexpensive drop clothes that are canvas.
  • Thread -- to match the color fabric and to match the canvas. -- Switch out bobbin thread as needed to have the correct color thread on the fabric layers as you sew them. (You may see contrasting thread in the step-by-step photos. This is done for visibility.)
  • Closure -- These instructions will guide you through a button and buttonhole closure but you may choose to use a magnetic purse closure, hook and loop tape, button or snap.
