From Edith Hobbs, proud mother of the designer, Kathleen Hobbs McKay, and proud grandmother of the mermaid:

This is a Mermaid costume, the fabric is -- the top half from a soft yellowish knit that had a sort of shell pucker texture (looked sort of like fish scales). The lower part of the body and bottom (the fins) are a green cotton which were stuffed with poly foam below the feet area to hold the fins out.

She stipple- stitched the upper part of the green fabric bottom with a wavy shell stitch to give the illusion of fish scales there. The pink things are shell appliqués from felt - made to give the appearance of a Mermaid's bra.

It was a free-hand design. Kathleen laid out a bunting (sleep-shirt that had ties at the bottom) on some newspaper. Using the garment as a model, she drew her Mermaid body and fins on the newspaper, then duct-taped the paper pattern together and tried it on baby to fine-tune until she had a working pattern. Then she cut out the fabric and constructed the costume.

We took pictures with Jason and Kathleen holding Aria in one arm and a fishing pole in the other -- "What a catch".

Kathleen also made the quilt and quilted it by hand that the baby is lying on.
