From Sheila:

As a beginner sewer, I found this project quick, easy, economical and great fun to make. I used McCall's pattern #8869 to make a clown suit. Then, using spray paint and construction paper, I decorated an appropriate sized box. Thus, turning an ordinary clown into a Jack-in-the box! The trick, is to cut an oval in the top of the box (long way facing front and back) just big enough to fit into. This allows you to climb in, rotate the box and let it sit on your hips. Cut out the entire bottom of the box and use this for your lid. Attach lid by making a cardboard hinge and secure it by using wood glue. I used fishing line to support the lid and the handle. The handle is just old plastic kite supports wrapped in colorful electrical tape. I was definitely a hit on Halloween!
