Buttons Without Buttonholes

Button Closures Without Buttonholes

By Debbie Colgrove, About.com

When your working with an old sewing machine that doesn't make balanced buttonholes, buttonholes can be a frustrating adventure. Maybe your just running out of time to get that Halloween costume finished. Use these tips to eliminate the need for buttonholes.
These tips are also helpful on clothing for someone with fine motor skill difficulties that make buttons difficult.
All of these tips work better with flat buttons than with shank buttons.
  • Use snaps (pronged or sew-on) and sew a button on the outside of the garment, hiding the snap in the process.
  • If the area is not under a lot of stress or pull, sew on dots or squares of Velcro as a closure and sew a button on the outside of the garment.
