Fabric and Notion Storage

I live in an area that is not conducive to buying what you need when the mood strikes. It doesn't take long to learn to buy things when you see them.

Fabric and Notion Organizational Cubbies

My husband built individual cubbies for my bins of fabric and shelves for my baskets of notions. We used three quarter inch sanded plywood for the shelving and supports.
We did a lot of planning to utilize every inch of space and keep everything accessible. Although the fabric bins are heavy, I am able to get any bin out without moving other bins. The top shelf is utilized for interfacing, rolls of cording, stuffing and bolts of fabric which didn't fit in bins. I intend to use up the bolts in the near future so I am not concerned with them being exposed to dust and light. My goal is to eventually have all of the fabric in bins. I may even purchase more bins for the top shelf items, but we will not be adding dividers to the top shelf. The dividers on the other shelves supply support for the upper shelves. Although all of the bins are from the same company and they are all 58 quart, they are not all the same measurements. Some were bought years ago and the newer containers are not as square as the older containers.

The notions cubbies are not finished yet. There will be a second set of cubbies on a hinged door in front of the present shelves. I used a label maker to label each basket of notions. Organizing the notions is a major transformation to my organization plan! I can actually find things and know what I have on hand now.

These cubbies and shelves may eventually be painted but not immediately.

When I posted about storage solutions for my fabric stash, many of you emailed asking for directions on how we built our shelving system. I can give out sewing directions but did not feel confident with building instructions so I contacted our About.com guide to woodworking, Chris Baylor. Chris did a great job explaining how we built this system with directions that even I could follow. He also went a step further and has included directions for how adding an ironing board. Find these great directions and the ironing board instructions at Build a Craft Storage Center (with Ironing Board Option)
