A slight addition and long pronged snaps transform a bowl into a basket.

Fabric Bowl Become Fabric Basket

Following the basic direction in the book, Fast, Fun & Easy Fabric Bowls by Linda Johansen, I made a basic 14" bowl. I used the same method described in the book for creating the bowls, to create a 1 1/8" X 18" handle. Before finishing the edges, I rounded the ends of the strip and then enclosed drapery pull cord in the edges of the handle. This added extra body to the handle.

I didn't want a plain ring to show and I didn't want the handle "fixed" in to place. Snap Setter Snaps were a perfect solution. Using a colored capped prong for the snap socket on the outside of the bowl and a colored capped prong for the snap stud on the inside of the handle, it appears to be a color stud. The handle rotates out of the way for anxious kids.

I wanted to test the strength of the snap holding the handle on to the basket. I loaded the bowl with six twelve ounce cans of soda. The bowl did warp from the weight of the cans as I lifted it off the table, however even when I "bounced" the bowl full of soda cans, the handle held tight!

I would not try this without having the long pronged snaps. Remember, the snap prongs need to bend after they go through two layers of fabric as well as the extra thick interfacing.
