What project you are sharing?
Children's traveling placemat. I chose individual fabrics for each child. Pretty sparkly girly fabrics for the girls, horses and cars plus the John Deere fabric for the boys. I have more photos of the others if you are interested.
How long did it take you to sew the project?
Including the cut out time, it took me about 2 hours to completion. On one of the mats I used pre-quilted fabric that had different fabric on each side. Using this type of fabric made the project take less time. All I had to do was roll the edges, add the pockets and ribbon. On all the others I used two complimentary fabrics, then you sew on the pockets then sew on the outside ribbon. Then sew the two pieces together and put pelon in between then close it up. I have been sewing since I was 10. So I've been sewing for over 50 years. I'm sure what is easy for me might be difficult for beginners.
Tips and Tricks
- Using pre-quilted material takes less time because you only have to roll the edges instead of sewing two fabrics together, then add the stiff pelon in between.
- When I cut out the pockets I always use an iron to press all the seams under. This makes the fabric lay flat when you pin it on the mat.
- I'm sure you could start with a pre-made placemat if you wanted to, then add the pockets and ribbon.
- You can purchase children's utensils and unique plates easily on the internet.
