Even the best made garment will occasionally lose a button. Here you'll find simple directions to sew the button back on your garment.
Difficulty Level: Easy Time Required: 5 minutes
Here's How:
- You will need: needle, thread, scissors, straight pin or another needle, and the button.
- Thread and knot your needle. Place the needle in to the fabric so that the knot is going to be behind the fabric.
- Make a couple of stitches in the fabric, where the button is to be located.
- Bring the needle up through the button. Lay the straight pin on top of the button and bring your needle and thread back down through the button, so that the straight pin is lying under the thread which is holding on your button.
- Make about six stitches over the straight pin, to anchor your button.
- For a 4 hole button, repeat the above step for the other two holes.
- Bring the needle and thread to the back of the fabric and knot the thread in the threads that have sewn the button to the garment.
- Remove the straight pin.
- Avoid the urge to over sew the button. Too many threads will not give you professional results.
- If you do not have a spare needle or straight pin, use a smooth tooth pick.
- If you lost the original button, try "stealing" a button from the shirt tail area and replace that button with a close match.
