Sewing Q&A
July 2002 Q&A

I always get a little fold of extra fabric at the top when I sew a fly-front zipper. How can I solve this problem?

When the center front edge of the fly is held taut, the fold disappears.
  • Just before applying the waistband, trim 1/8" to 1/4" from the waist edge on the zipper overlap side, tapering gradually to the original edge (2).

  • Apply the waistband, making sure both sides line up at the waist edge. Pull the waistband snugly closed to mark the placement for a button or hook-and-eye closure.
