I would like to remove the buttons on a denim jacket and replace them. How can I remove them without resorting to an electric saw?

Twist one side up to remove button.
The buttons consist of two parts, the button on the front and the stud on the underside. Use two pairs of pliers to remove the button. Grab the back portion firmly with one pair, then grab the button portion with the other pair. Twist one side of the button up to release the front and back from each other (1).

Using matching thread, zigzag back and forth over the resulting hole to close it. Then sew the new buttons in the same positions.
