After making the Veggie Tales Larry Boy costume I decided to make a trick or treat bag to go with it. And since we were also having a Veggie Tales birthday party Halloween weekend, it was decided to make them as favors for the little ones at the party and for the Halloween party at school. So I wound up making about 18 bags!
Then the next problem was how many Larry Boys and Bob Tomatoes to make, I decided to make it hard on myself by having a character on both sides of the bag. Just using one character would certainly make it go faster, but I always have to go the more complicated way.
When playing around with the costume, I made a bag out of the fleece fabric, but it just didn't work right. I didn't like the way the applique pieces looked and the stretchy material was a hassle to deal with when trying to do the appliques. But I did love the way the handle turned out with the fleece material, so I used that for the felt bags.
Supplies Needed:
Assembly
1. Cut out two 12" pieces of red and green fleece. Sew three sides together, then sew across the two corners to square off the bottom of the bag.

2. Using pinking sheers cut across the top of the bags.

3. Cut a 4" by 17" piece of fleece for each handle. Fold right sides together matching the 17" edges. Sew the 17" edge, then turn right out.
4. Sew handle on the inside along the seams on each side of the bag.

5. Cut face pieces out of felt. These were glued on with spray-on craft glue. This works great. I did find out that fabric glue does not work on the felt. Follow the instructions on the craft glue and be sure to use in a well ventilated area.
The bag was a big hit with "Larry Boy" and he carried it around all day!
Thanks for sharing this great project the kids are bound to love!
Note: Fusible web is another solution for attaching the face pieces. Paper backed fusibles allow you to fuse an entire piece of felt, draw the features on the paper, then cut them out and press them in place. Steam-a-Seam 2; Iron-On Double Stick Fusible Web is one of many choices for this type of project. Shop for Steam-A-Seam 2; Iron-On Double Stick Fusible Web at Joanns.com
