Hint one:
When altering a pattern to the smaller: bonding tape like Stitch-witchery makes a nice, flat, permanent crease that can be folded, stapled, bent, mutilated, what have you. Works on "do-sew", tissue and fabric.

Hint two.
When I alter a pattern to the larger, I keep a roll of adding machine tape on hand. Most alterations can be completed in the two or so inches. The tape can be affixed more or less permanently as in Hint One. I like this, because when I am trying to adjust a pattern, it aggravates me to have little slips of paper falling off, tape either sticking too much or not enough, etc. Adding machine tape is so cheap it is embarrassing. I have been using the first roll of a three roll pack for a couple of years, and I think I paid all of one dollar and change for the package.
