You can buy and oven mit but making your own allows you to have the colors and the thickness you want.

Materials needed to sew an oven mitt:

Cotton fabric of your choice - heavy pre-quilted or cotton fabric, *batting and backing Quilt Your Own Fabric
Thread
Double fold bias tape to match or contrast your fabric.

Materials to create a pattern:

*Note: I recommend using cotton batting and multiple layers if possible. Polyester will melt under extreme heat.

Using an Oven Mitt to Make a Pattern:

Press the mitt as flat as possible
Lay it on a piece of plain paper or pattern tracing material.
Trace the edges of the mitt.
Add a 1/2" to all edges.
Mark the bottom of the thumb indent. Cut the pattern out using the outside line create by adding a 1/2".

Using Your Hand to Create an Oven Mitt Pattern:

Smooth the lines to create a "mitt" appearance, approximately an inch from the edges of the traced hand.
Add a 1/2" to the edges.
Mark the bottom of the thumb indent.
Cut out the pattern using the outside line from adding a 1/2".

Fold the pattern in half at the wrist and extend the fold the length of the pattern. This fold line will be your grain line.
Pre-quilt your fabric, using multiple layers of batting or use thick pre-quilted fabric.
Lay the pattern on a single layer of your fabric, keeping the grain line an even distance from the fabric selvedge. Pin the grain line in place.
Pin the edges of the pattern in place.
Cut out the pattern piece from your fabric.

Un-pin the pattern piece and turn. the pattern piece over.
With the pattern piece turned over, repeat to cut out the second side of the oven mitt.

Place the fabric pieces right sides together, aligning the edges.
Using a scant 1/2" seam allowance, sew the edges of the pieces together, except for the wrist edge. At the indent for the thumb, follow the seam guide with the edge of the fabric until you must sew to the dot that was transferred on to the fabric.
Carefully clip to the thumb dot, cutting close to the dot but not through the dot or stitches.

Zigzag the seam allowances together on the newly cut edges.
Turn the mitt right side out. If your quilted fabric is extremely thick or if you were generous with your seam allowance, you may have to trim and re-finish the seam allowance.
Press well.
